Why Footwork is the Foundation of Boxing
At Fighter Club 17, we believe good boxing starts from the ground up. Your footwork determines your ability to attack, defend, and control the ring. Even the hardest hitter becomes vulnerable without proper movement.
The Basic Boxing Stance
Before you master footwork, you need a solid stance:
- Feet shoulder-width apart
- Front foot pointing forward, back foot at a 45° angle
- Weight evenly distributed (60/40 front/back)
- Knees slightly bent, stay light on your feet
Fundamental Footwork Techniques
1. Step & Slide
The most basic movement. Always move the foot closest to the direction first, then slide the other foot to maintain your stance width. Never cross your feet.
2. Pivot
Rotate on your lead foot to quickly change angles. The pivot is one of the most powerful defensive and offensive tools in boxing – it allows you to evade punches while countering.
3. Circle Movement
Move in a circular pattern around your opponent instead of moving straight back. Circling to your opponent's weak side (away from their power hand) puts you in a dominant position.
4. Cutting Off the RingUse angles to push your opponent into the corner or against the ropes. Step forward diagonally to cut off their escape routes.
